Gina's Story
Cold War Spy
It all started in a small town with a spy novel. Gina’s dream was to live in Europe and chase spies. In her second year of college, she worked as a cocktail waitress in a comedy club when a young man told her about the Army’s Counterintelligence Program. Not long after that, she was “eating dirt” in basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.
During her six-year Army career, Gina was assigned to a specialized unit in Germany, where she became part of a team that investigated the highest-profile espionage cases in the European Theater. A highlight of her career was watching Desert Storm traitor Albert Sombolay be arrested for spying. Sombolay was convicted and sentenced to 34 years in prison.
FBI Special Agent
In 1996, Gina graduated from the FBI Academy. She was assigned to the Orange County, California office to work on an Asian organized crime case that landed her as the only FBI Agent on a task force in Little Saigon. After 9/11, Gina became the Counterterrorism Program Coordinator in Los Angeles and supervised the Extraterritorial Squad responsible for investigating terrorism cases in Asia, India, and Australia. Gina later led the FBI’s largest Cyber and Computer Forensics Program which investigated the Sony Pictures hack by North Korea.
Chief Safety and Security Officer
In January of 2022, the CEO of LA Metro, the second largest transit agency in the nation with a $9 billion budget, contacted Gina and told her bus operators were afraid to come to work. During the pandemic, the Metro Code of Conduct was not enforced. Violent crime was at an all-time high, and the homeless were sheltering on the buses and trains. Gina immediately implemented her tried and true leadership formula when leading through chaos, crisis, and change by “getting the water out of the boat, surrounding herself with greatness, breaking down silos, persuading ALL personnel to take ownership of the problem and creating positive change through structure, collaboration, and inspiration. In 2023, violent crime throughout the LA Metro system had dropped by 32%. Although she is no longer with LA Metro, Gina will always be a transit worker advocate and will continue helping create a safer environment for all dedicated front-line employees.
