There’s a moment in every female motivational speaker’s journey when the path ahead looks nothing like the dream you started with. For me, that moment came multiple times throughout my 28-year career in law enforcement—a journey that would transform me from a cocktail waitress with a big dream to an FBI agent chasing global threats.
As a female keynote speaker, I’ve learned that leadership isn’t about having a perfect plan. It’s about having the courage to pivot, the resilience to keep moving, and the wisdom to find opportunity in unexpected places.
The Unexpected Classroom of Global Security
My journey began with an impossible dream. In my early twenties, working as a cocktail waitress and struggling to save money for college, I was determined to become a spy. The CIA was my target, but the path wasn’t straight—it was a winding road filled with challenges that would test my resolve.
One night, a conversation at the comedy club where I worked could have crushed my spirit. Someone told me bluntly, “The CIA doesn’t take people like you.” Those words could have been a stopping point. Instead, they became fuel.
A chance encounter in the college library changed everything. A young man told me about the Army’s Counterintelligence program—a path that could take me to Europe, allow me to work in civilian clothes, and help me earn my degree. The next day, I signed up. Not long after, I was eating dirt in basic training, learning that my dreams required more than just wishful thinking.
Lessons for Female Public Speakers and Aspiring Leaders
- Embrace the Unexpected My CIA dream didn’t work out exactly as planned. When I was rejected, it would have been easy to give up. But failure isn’t a wall—it’s a doorway to opportunities you haven’t yet imagined. I applied to the FBI, and they didn’t just accept me—they embraced what made me unique.
- Redefine Your Limitations As a female motivational speaker, I’ve learned that the most significant barriers are often the ones we create for ourselves. The naysayers who say “you can’t” are just road signs—not stop signs. My journey proves that with determination, you can transform obstacles into stepping stones.
- Find Strength in Vulnerability Leadership isn’t about appearing invincible. It’s about being honest about your journey, your struggles, and your unexpected turns. Every time I share my story—from cocktail waitress to FBI agent—I’m reminded that our most powerful tool is our authentic self.
Beyond the Mission: Lessons I bring from Global Security as a Female Keynote Speaker
In my years tracking Cold War spies, dismantling terrorist networks, and combating cyber-crime, I discovered that leadership is less about titles and more about mindset. It’s about:
- Adaptability in the face of unpredictable challenges
- Communication that bridges divides
- Courage to take risks when the outcome isn’t guaranteed
My podcast, “Lead Like a Lady,” continues this mission. Each episode is a testament to women who have risen above expectations, who have turned their unique experiences into powerful leadership narratives.
Practical Wisdom for Aspiring Leaders
If you’re feeling stuck, if the path ahead seems unclear, remember: your journey is your greatest asset. As a female keynote speaker, I’ve learned that the most compelling stories aren’t about perfection—they’re about persistence.
Take Small, Courageous Steps
- Volunteer for challenging projects
- Speak up in meetings
- Embrace opportunities that scare you
Reframe Your Perspective Failure isn’t a destination—it’s a direction. Each setback is a lesson, each rejection a redirection.
The True Measure of Leadership
Throughout my career, I’ve learned that leadership isn’t about gender. It’s about grit, perspective, and the unwavering commitment to “accomplish the mission.”
“Just accomplish the mission!” – This isn’t just a motto. It’s a philosophy that transcends professional boundaries.
When I step onto a stage as a female public speaker, I’m not just sharing stories. I’m dismantling stereotypes about what leadership looks like, sounds like, and feels like.
Your Invitation to Transform
Whether you’re leading a global team or navigating personal challenges, the principles remain the same. Leadership is about vision, courage, and the ability to inspire others to see beyond their current limitations.
